Blood Pressure Readings
The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have it tested. Once you take that step, understanding your results is the key to keeping your blood pressure under control. There are five blood pressure categories and two numbers you need to know:
Systolic Blood Pressure
This is the first number in your blood pressure reading. It indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when your heart beats.
Diastolic Blood Pressure
The second number in your blood pressure reading, this number indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while your heart is resting between beats.
Normal
If your blood pressure falls less than 120/80 mm Hg, it is within the normal range. Continue to follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly to maintain your normal blood pressure.
Elevated
Blood pressure readings that consistently range from 120-129 systolic and below 80 mm Hg diastolic are considered elevated. If your blood pressure falls in this category, you are likely to develop high blood pressure in the future. Begin taking steps to control your blood pressure to prevent this.
Hypertension Stage 1
Hypertension Stage 1 is when your blood pressure consistently ranges from 130-139 systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic. Doctors will most likely prescribe lifestyle changes or consider adding blood pressure medication.
Hypertension Stage 2
Hypertension Stage 2 is when your blood pressure consistently ranges at 140/90 mm Hg or higher. You will most likely be prescribed blood pressure medication and lifestyle changes.
Hypertensive Crisis
This stage requires medical attention. If your blood pressure suddenly exceeds 180/120 mm Hg, wait five minutes and test it again. If your readings are still high, contact your doctor immediately. If you begin to experience chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness/weakness, change in vision, or difficulty speaking, call 911 immediately.
