What is the difference between Family Medicine and Internal Medicine?

A Family Medicine practitioner is a pediatrician and an internist combined into one specialty and cares for both children and adults.

An Internal Medicine practitioner only cares for adults.

Regardless of your age or gender, it is important to your health that you develop a relationship with a physician. This helps you feel more comfortable telling your physician about issues that you are having with your health. At first, it may be uncomfortable but once that phase is over, maintaining a good relationship will be beneficial to your health.

What do family doctors do?

A family doctor provides a wide range of services that fall under the label of “general medicine.” Services include family planning, health education, immunizations, treating minor diseases and injuries, checkups for children and adults, screening tests and disease diagnosis.

Family doctors take a proactive approach to medicine. Instead of treating you after you have a heart attack like a cardiologist, a family physician wants to help avoid a heart attack ever happening. Setting up a plan to help you exercise more, implement a better diet, and lower your cholesterol.

What diseases do internists treat?

Internists focus on adult medicine. While the name “internists” may sound like these doctors only treat internal problems. However, that is not the case. They care for their patients for life, from late teens through older age. Internists devote three years of education specifically to studying adult medicine, learning how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that affect adults.

The conditions they treat are the following:

  • General Medicine
  • Respiratory disease
  • Vascular and heart disease
  • Blood problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Joint and rheumatologic problems
  • Digestive problems
  • Endocrine and hormonal problems
  • Urinary problems
  • Neurological problems
  • Infectious disease
  • Mental health
  • Diabetes
